Book overview: Gillian Grable's book about Jennie Raffield Williams is both troubling and moving. Troubling because it exposes the decades-long failure of the state, the public, and mental health professionals to provide appropriate care to Jennie and other patients with mental and intellectual disabilities. Moving because Jennie Williams's resolve to be reunited with the family she loved, the steadfast support she received from her children, and the care she received from some individuals at the hospital allow her story to rise above its sadness. Gillian Grable's book calls for all of us to do better by the most vulnerable in society. From Jim Martin, former Commissioner of Human Resources for the State of Georgia
Gillian’s bio: In Until We Meet Again: The Life of Jennie Raffield Williams, author Gillian Grable blends the details of a real-life biography with the artistic license of historical fiction to capture the powerful story of a woman who persevered more than 50 years locked up in Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, Georgia, longing to return to her real home and family. The events and experiences inspired by Jennie Raffield Williams’s life are illuminated by the authentic letters and writings kept as historical records by Jennie’s daughter and interviews with people who lived and worked at Central State Hospital during the decades Jennie was kept there. Together with Grable’s storytelling, Jennie’s life is given the dignity and awareness she so richly deserves.
