Jazz Vocalist Maria Howell to perform in Allen's Market

Jazz vocalist Maria Howell will perform in Allen’s Market on Friday, September 10 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $10.00 each and available at Allied Arts, 201 North Wayne Street. Allen’s Market is located at 101 West McIntosh Street in downtown Milledgeville. Call 478.452.3950 for tickets or for more information.

Howell is from North Carolina and now resides in Atlanta. You will remember her best as the choir soloist in “The Color Purple”.  Maria’s performance was quoted by one critic as being “one of the film’s most stirring moments!”  This major motion picture, directed by Steven Spielberg, proved to be a springboard for even more visual exposure in George Lucas', "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" as a singer named "Goldie".  In the USA Network movie, "Linda", starring Richard Thomas (better known as John Boy Walton) and Virginia Madsen, she played the role of "Shirley".  She also appeared as "Elsa" in the CBS movie, "Scattered Dreams", starring Tyne Daly and Gerald McRaney.  In the world of theater, Howell played alongside Dr. Maya Angelou as her daughter, "Marietta", in Langston Hugh's, "Tambourines to Glory".

Howell started singing in church at the age of 13 and hasn't stopped since.  Throughout her career, she has had the opportunity to share the stage with such acts as Najee, George Howard, Ramsey Lewis, George Benson, Nancy Wilson, Tuck & Patti, Marvin Hamlisch, Kim Waters, Ray Charles, Boyz II Men, K-Ci & JoJo, Philip Bailey and Babyface. In addition to her performances in the US, Howell has also performed extensively in the Asian-Pacific  region. She has entertained audiences in Tokyo, Hiroshima, Sapporo and the island of Okinawa.

Howell has released three CD’s, “Peace of Mind”, “Same Old Story”, and most recently “Acoustically Yours”. The CD’s will be available the night of the performance. For the September 10 performance in Allen’s Market, Howell will be accompanied by Bill Wilson on piano and Ramon Pooser on bass.
