Picnic in the Plaza June 1, 2006

Black Heritage Plaza

Vocalist Maria Howell and trumpet player and band leader Ken Trimmins are teaming up for an evening of jazz music on Thursday, June 1 at 7:00 pm. Allied Arts and Milledgeville Mainstreet invite the public to the  free outdoor concert at the Black Heritage Plaza on McIntosh Street in downtown Milledgeville. The public is invited to come “picnic in the plaza” and hear contemporary and traditional jazz music at its best. Audience members may bring chairs, tables and a picnic supper or snacks. Food will be available from downtown resturants.

Both Howell and Trimmins have performed individually at the Allen’s Market Building during the past year. Allied Arts director Randy Cannon said, “We were so impressed with these two artists and their music and thought they would really compliment each other on stage. We arranged for them to meet and they began playing and singing together throughout the state.”   The June 1 concert will be the first time they will share the stage together in Milledgeville.

Singer and actress Maria Howell has three CD’s to her credit and an impressive list of movie credits. Howell’s performance as the choir soloist in the movie “The Color Purple” was hailed by one critic as being “one of the film’s most stirring moments”. Howell played alongside Dr. Maya Angelou as her daughter, Marietta, in Langston Hughes’ “Tambourines to Glory”. Creative Loafing Magazine said Howell “covers the ground between jazz and pop and does it with a gorgeous voice, impeccable delivery and a dazzling sense of style.”

Ken Trimmins has been playing jazz music for over twenty years and has been a featured performer at many renowned jazz festivals including the Atlanta Montreaux Jazz Festival and at the Jacksonville, Clearwater, and Savannah Jazz Festivals. The band for the Milledgeville concert will be composed of piano, bass, and drums with Trimmins on flugelhorn, valve trombone, and trumpet. Howell and Trimmins will both provide vocals.
